Welcome to the California Grape and Tree Fruit League’s website. We hope you find the information here valuable and we encourage you to contact us with suggestions on how to make it even better.

Last week an editorial appeared in the Fresno Bee entitled “Make food safety number 1” which made some valid points as to the need for additional regulation but it advocated those regulations to take place at the state level. In addition, the editor made the statement that “the agricultural industry is content relying on voluntary food safety programs, while awaiting further actions that may or may not come from the federal government”. I wrote back to the Bee expressing my disagreement and to set the record straight.

The fact is that many segments of U.S. agriculture, particularly the fresh produce community through the leadership of United Fresh Produce Association supported by a number of California associations, are actively engaged in shaping the food safety legislation that has already passed the House of Representatives and currently being formed in the Senate. This work is based upon these core principles: 1) that there should be mandatory regulatory oversight at the federal level to ensure the highest level of consumer confidence; 2) that such regulations should apply to imported as well as domestically produced food and; 3) that regulations be risk based and commodity specific.

The key is to have such additional regulatory oversight at the national level. To have California act legislatively alone will not resolve the issue and would most likely lead to different production standards in other states and countries which could put consumers at risk.

Thanks again for visiting and if we can be of service, please do not hesitate to contact us.
